On Sunday 30th March 2008, Greenisland Ladies Under 12 Squad travelled to Dublin for a major tournament organised by the Irish Hockey Association.
Four of the girls, play together in the U14 squad, but as they are only 11 and 12 years old, they were still eligible to play in this tournament. However the other 6 squad members have never played together before and their outstanding performances left many people speechless.

Match One saw them face Yeats County, with the sun shining and the girls in high spirits, the standard of hockey was second to none and here the goals started flying in. Final Score 8-0 to Greenisland.
The success of the first match followed through the next five and the girls pulled out some unbelievable performances, beating Naas 4-0, Glenanne 7-1, Railway Union 7-0, Greenfield Aces 3-0 and finally beating Tullamore 6-0. Tallying up an impressive 35 goals for and only conceding 1 against, the girls were unstoppable on this fantastic day.
Sophie Mills was top goal scorer of the tournament, with 17 in total, closely followed by Jade Gardiner with 11, Claire Courtney and Sam Cox got 3 a piece and young Jodie Mills netted her first of many goals to come for Greenisland.
Club Captain Norma Montgomery who was watching the matches stated, “The standard of hockey I witnessed here today is unbelievable from an Under 12 squad, I have never seen anything like it.”
Although there were no trophies allocated, as the festival was focused on fun and enjoyment, the organiser of the event, Fiona Mills, stated that Greenislands’ results were fantastic, best she had seen all day and a credit to the Senior Club. Therefore a big well done to the girls who really played for their shirts and gave a fantastic impression of Greenislands current youth system.
Following the tournament the girls received goodie bags and were given VIP access to watch the ESB Irish Senior Cup Final between Ballymoney and Pegasus.
A fantastic day for all, many thanks to Emma Douglas for umpiring, Alyson Douglas for assisting with the coaching and looking after the girls. And to our supporters Norma Montgomery, Sara Douglas, Andy Edwards, Louise Hunter, Ivan and Sharon Johnston a big thank you.
Coach Karla Hunter said a big thank you must go to the organisers of this event; it was a superb day for all. “I am extremely proud of my young squad and overjoyed with their results and sportsmanship, they are a credit to Greenisland Ladies Hockey Club. Well Done Girls”!
