Omagh Ladies 1st XI 1
Greenisland Ladies 1st XI 1
Sat 4th October 2008

Greenisland 1st XI, sponsored by 3fivetwo Healthcare, played their first match of the Senior 1 league season. It was always going to be tough opener away to Omagh who had just missed out on promotion last season. Both teams had played against each other in the previous week and drawn but even with a few personnel changes on both sides it was going to be a similar encounter.

After a pitch inspection and in atrocious conditions the match got under way. Omagh were quickly into their stride and had Greenisland under pressure for the opening 15 minutes. With resolute defending though Greenisland worked their way into the match and eventually were awarded the first penalty corner of the match. Omagh struck back and had two penalty corners of their own. With the weather continuing to be bad the first half was drawing to a close when Omagh nicked the ball on the edge of the Greenisland circle. It was quickly pushed into the circle and Leslie Alcorn slotted home. A few moments later the half time whistle went.

After an encouraging pep talk from coach Mark Weber, Greenisland again took to the field ready to dig out a result. The second half became more open with both teams having scoring opportunities. From a long ball Carly Ann Bennett rounded the Omagh keeper but her shot slid wide. Then from a drive hit into the Omagh circle Greenisland got their second penalty corner of the half. From the slip pass to the right from Gillian Kane, Nikki Cairns played the ball across for Erin McMaw to score at the back post.

This stirred Omagh to up the tempo with a period of ten minutes intense pressure. Ruth Hewitt in nets again excelled during this period. Cheryl McCracken was working tirelessly in midfield to stem the flow. Greenisland then counter attacked and from a cross by Carly Ann Bennett, Dawn Montgomery shot just wide. The game now was end to end as each team pressed for a winner. Omagh had a shot which hit the post in the dying minutes however the score finished 1 - 1.

This is a very encouraging result and is a deserved point well earned. The whole team worked very hard to dig out this result in sodden conditions.
