Greenisland 1st XI, sponsored by 3fivetwo Healthcare, played Ballyclare away in a Senior 1 League match. This was always going to be tough encounter with both teams fighting for points.
Ballyclare had the better of the opening exchanges and it was a while before Greenisland made progress into the Ballyclare half. However, Ballyclare kept pressing and after a ball was cleared over the backline the umpire gave a penalty corner. From the push in a slip ball to left allowed Sara Galbraith to slot home.
The second half started with a sustained period of pressure by Greenisland and this was rewarded with a goal from open play by Dawn Montgomery. Greenisland kept up the pressure for another 15 minutes and were awarded numerous penalty corners put could not find the back of the goal. Ballyclare then broke away and in the ensuing melee in the circle pushed the ball into the Greenisland net.
Greenisland continued to press but were again caught on the counter attack on several occasions and Ballyclare were awarded a penalty flick that was saved superbly by Ruth Hewitt. They also won two penalty corners and scored from both on the rebound after good saves by Ruth Hewitt. Final score 4-1 to Ballyclare.
This was a disappointing result but the early second half performance was very good. Greenisland need to take this period of play and sustain it through out the matches ahead.
