Greenisland 1st XI, sponsored by 3fivetwo Healthcare, played Queens University at home in their second league match. This was a fast and furious match with great intensity from both sides.
Greenisland had the first penalty corner of the match, which was pushed wide. Queens immediately came back into the match and had two quick penalty corners in a row that both were pushed wide. Greenisland through Erin McMaw pressed forward and as the ball came into the circle Claire McManus slotted home for Greenisland to take the lead.
Queens then upped their pace to a frantic level and an incisive move through the centre led to a Queens player with a clear shot on goal that was coolly put away. Within minutes a similar move from Queens brought the same reward. The halftime score was Greenisland 1 Queens 2.
The second half started with the Queens left midfield player driving strongly into the circle and scoring within seconds on the restart. Greenisland tried to rally and Audrey MacCorquodale was steadfast in her work to get the team moving forward. With regular inter changes the Greenisland team kept pushing. However, another cutting move by Queens through the centre brought a fourth goal.
Greenisland could have dropped their heads but they dug deep and with good running from Erin McMaw, Carly Anne Bennett and Dawn Montgomery they pushed forward. An excellent ball from Claire McManus lead to a strong run down the right from Carly Anne Bennett and from the pull back Dawn Montgomery scored and exquisite reverse stick goal from a very acute angle.
Greenisland then started to press for further goals right up until the final whistle. Against a strong Queens forward line Naomi Deering, Louise Archibald and Ruth Creaney worked tirelessly. The rolling midfield of Cheryl McCracken, Jenny Winning, Gillian Kane, Nikki Cairns and Genevieve Cathcart ran and tackled to the very last moment in a sterling effort. Ruth Hewitt was her majestic self in goals.
Although this result was not in Greenisland’s favour there areas that can be built upon which will set the team up for better results for their hard work in the future.
