Greenisland Ladies Hockey Club’s 1st XI, sponsored by 3fivetwo Healthcare, played their opening fixture on Saturday at Carrickfergus Leisure Centre. The opponents were Premier side Randalstown who finished 4th in their League last season.
Under no illusions, the Greenisland squad knew they would be in for a difficult match against a team bolstered by current and former international players. This proved to be the case when the visitors opened the scoring after 4 minutes. The goal came from a penalty corner, drag flicked by Rebecca Dallas into the top right hand corner of the Greenisland net. This skill is currently being honed by Greenisland’s Jenny Henry, unfortunately the home team were never awarded a penalty corner during the game and Jenny didn’t get a chance to show what she could do.
In the first half, Greenisland defended in numbers, and thanks to an excellent display of goalkeeping from Ruth Hewitt, managed to come off just 3-0 down at half time. A team talk and re-organisation later, Greenisland Ladies performed much better in the second half. This saw a more evenly balanced contest with the quickness of thought and deed by Randalstown reaping a further two goals.
Squad fitness levels were good, despite the soaring heat of the day, and the commitment of the Greenisland players was evident. The irony of the weather was not lost on Coach, Mark Webber, “We have been soaked during every training session in August and to face the heat of the sun and fired-up Randalstown proved too much. We’ve now established a benchmark for performances throughout the season.”
