Greenisland 1st XI, sponsored by 3fivetwo Healthcare, played Cookstown away
on Saturday the 18th October. There was constant drizzle at the start of the
match. Cookstown immediately went on the attack. However this came to nothing
and Greenisland gently played their way into the game. With Jenny Winning
now operating in centre midfield Greenisland started to get their patterns
and movement flowing. This was turning into a tough no compromise encounter
with neither side giving quarter.
Each side had opportunities to score. Cookstown building slowly to Greenisland
counter attacking style. Cookstown had several penalty corners but Audrey
MacCorquodale closed them down every time and they came to nothing. Audrey
was having an outstanding match ably supported by Ruth Creaney. The first
half came to a close and nil each.
The second half was again a tough, hard fought encounter. Each side pressed
the other to achieve any gaps. Although each side was tiring they still kept
battling on to get the upper hand. Greenisland through Dawn Montgomery and
Erin McMaw created several openings but Cookstown eventually snuffed the moves
out. The match was drawing to a close with seconds remaining when a last ditch
attack from Cookstown saw the ball played across the face of the Greenisland
goal where the centre forward was able to tap in at the back post. From the
restart Greenisland immediately attacked and the Cookstown keeper cleared
off the goal line as the final whistle sounded.
Coach Mark Webber commenting on the 1st XI’s early season form declared
himself pleased with the teams progress. ‘ We lost today to a goal scored
in the last 15 seconds of the game. The reason Cookstown got behind us was
that we were pushing on for the win ourselves. The very last touch of the
game saw them clear the ball off their own line. We have played three of the
strongest teams in the league and have shown improvement in each game. This
is a young squad willing to work hard and learn together. Greenisland made
the right call I believe in implementing a policy of youth’.
