Greenisland 1st XI, sponsored by 3fivetwo Healthcare, came to face their third opponents of the Winemark Shield competition, playing the Senior 1 side Queens University. The team went out with a point to prove following two defeats and were determined to get a positive result knowing that the opposition were in the same league. The match began with a Greenisland pass back in the hot sunshine and quickly Queens made a break scoring the first goal of the match from a penalty corner. This was a wake up call to Greenisland who then upped the pace of their game leading to several attacks of the Queens circle. Greenisland were unfortunate not to be level at the break after winning many attacking corners and being denied two goals.
After an encouraging talk from coach Mark Webber the second half began with a bang and the Greenisland team won an attacking penalty corner which was nicely slotted away by the brute force of Erin McMaw. The match itself was very even with similar statistics of attacking and defending corners and possession. However neither team could manage to score again leaving the final score at one each. This is an encouraging result for the Greenisland 1st XI for the season ahead.
