Greenisland 1st XI, sponsored by 3fivetwo Healthcare, played Ballymena at home on Saturday 25th October. This was always going to be tough encounter as Ballymena were a Premier League side last season.
Ballymena started the faster but their work was fruitless. Greenisland started to get more into the game with Nikki Cairns the captain driving the midfield forward. Erin McMaw, Carly Anne Bennett and Dawn Montgomery worked tirelessly up front and kept the Ballymena backs busy.
Ballymena then broke forward on a rare attack and got a penalty corner. From this Ballymena got a shot on target that sneaked in at the right post. Greenisland then pressed again with the Ballymena keeper coming to the edge of her circle to help her defensive colleagues. The first half came to a close with Ballymena leading one nil.
The second half was mainly Greenisland attacking with six shots on goal and treble the number of penalty corners that Ballymena achieved. However, with the Ballymena keeper diving in all directions the back of the net could not be found.
The defensive line of Greenisland excelled all day, with the midfield working exceptionally hard to force Ballymena back all the time. This overall was a very good performance by Greenisland but just couldn’t capitalise on it to get the result the performance was worthy off. Greenisland continue to work hard and eventually will be rewarded for their excellent efforts.
