Greenisland 1st XI, sponsored by 3fivetwo Healthcare, played their final match of the Winemark Shield against Omagh 1st XI at Carrickfergus Leisure Centre. Omagh had achieved a couple of good results in the competition so far so this was going to be a good test of Greenisland’s progress.
In the early stages of the match it was nip and tuck with both teams battling for dominance in the midfield. Eventually Omagh broke through into the Greenisland defensive circle and Ann Buchanan managed to get a shot on target. This was deflected wide whilst hitting Greenisland player’s foot and a penalty flick was awarded to Omagh. The Greenisland keeper Ruth Hewitt brilliantly saved Ann Buchanan’s flick and Ruth continued to make more great saves during the first half at various stages when Omagh broke through.
Shortly after the saved penalty flick Greenisland went on the counter offensive and developed a sustained period of pressure. Eventually a penalty corner was awarded and from the resultant shot and rebound Claire McManus scored as she lifted the ball over the keeper. After another period of ebbing and flowing Greenisland got on top and were awarded another penalty corner after great stick skills from Nikki Cairns. From the penalty corner shot Jenny Winning slotted home the rebound leaving the score 2-0 to Greenisland at half time.
The second half opened with Omagh quickly out of the blocks and dominating play for the next ten minutes. During this time Ann Buchanan went on a mazy run into the circle and managed to squeeze the ball into the net at the near post. Slowly Greenisland started to react but were caught out at penalty corner where Emma Pinkerton of Omagh slotted home on the rebound after the initial shot had been saved.
With the match delicately balanced Greenisland upped their game and finished the match the stronger of both teams. Final result 2-2. Ruth Hewitt and Claire McManus had outstanding matches especially as Claire played out of position. The Greenisland squad of all 13 players worked exceptionally hard and this result shows excellent progress is being made.
