Greenisland 2nd XI, sponsored by 3fivetwo Healthcare, played at home to Knock
in what was to be a very close match. From the whistle the defence found themselves
under pressure from a strong and experienced Knock side, but with great tackles
from Cory Johnston, Jacqueline Adamson, Jackie Nelson and Rachael Davis they
managed to keep the Knock attack at bay. The midfield of Faye McCune, Eileen
Reynolds and Alannah McCombe, despite having to defend, managed to slip several
balls up to Tara Connor who was unlucky not to find the backboard. Knock continued
putting pressure on Greenisland and won several penalty corners, eventually
scoring just before the half time break.
After an encouraging half time talk from team manager Norma Montgomery and
coach Karen Elwood, Greenisland returned to the second half with more determination
and energy than the first period. From the whistle Eileen Reynolds was dominating
the midfield laying balls off for the wings, with Julie McIlrath making good
runs towards the circle putting pressure on the Knock defence. Despite the
team making ground offensively, the defence still managed to find itself under
pressure on a number of occasions, but the defensive line remained strong.
With five minutes to go the team pushed forward for an equalizer. This came
from a well worked penalty corner with a Jackie Nelson strike being deflected
into the net by Rachael Davis. With a minute to go the team held strong and
gained a well deserved point. Players of the match were Rachael Davis and
Eileen Reynolds.
