Greenisland 2nd XI, sponsored by 3fivetwo Healthcare, played away to Annadale
and went out hard from the whistle. Within the first minute they had managed
to win a penalty corner, in which Jackie Nelson converted. Coach Norma Montgomery
only had one word to say, “beautiful”. Within minutes Greenisland
found themselves 2-0 up, when Lindsay Anderson sent the ball across goal to
Tara Connor who put it away.
Good runs up and down the wing by Julie McIlwrath on the left and Keri Humphries
superb balls on the right, gave Greenisland the possession. After a barrage
of chances at the Annadale goalie, Julie McIlwrath finally slotted the ball
in the back of the net to make it 3-0. Play continued and again Greenisland
found themselves in the Annadale circle. Several penalty corners later Keri
Humphries hit the post, the ball was met by Eileen Reynolds and it was her
turn to increase the goal tally making it 4-0. Half time was looming but Annadale
refused to finish the half with the current scoreline. Their efforts to penetrate
the Greenisland goalmouth were unsuccessful, thanks to the defensive back
line. Annadale were unlucky not to grab a goal back before the break.
Greenisland started the second period with more grit and determination than
the previous half. Keri Humphries made a superb run up the line, making it
past several players on the way and then passed the ball to Eileen Reynolds
who spotted Tara Connor in the circle who managed to increase the goal tally
to five. With ten minutes remaining Jackie Nelson upped her game and started
to push for what could be history in the making!! She was determined to make
her first ever hat trick for Greenisland Ladies in eleven years. Meanwhile
Keri Humphries added her name to the score sheet as she hit the backboard.
With minutes remaining Jackie Nelson made history as she slotted the ball
convincingly into the back of the net, to make the final score 8-0 to Greenisland
Ladies.
