Greenisland 3rd XI played Ballymoney 3rd XI in the second round of the Junior Cup on Saturday 15th November.
The Greenisland team were determined for a win and this was obvious from the whistle. The team worked well together with left wing Louise Hunter putting pressure on the Ballymoney defence from the beginning resulting in a well earned goal. Greenisland’s spirits were lifted and it could only get better from this point. As the match went on the midfield stuck to the pace well and made sure their players were marked tightly. They assisted the forwards, keeping the ball in the opposition's half of the pitch where Sandra Wallace, Greenisland’s right wing was there to score the second goal of the match from a very difficult angle. The visitors were kept at bay in the first half, the defence strong in their tackles making shots on goal impossible.
With half time over Greenisland came back on the pitch eager to secure the win. In the course of the second half Ballymoney came back to score one goal but this was too late in the game to make any difference. Greenisland worked effectively as a team with the defenders clearing up any loose balls that managed to get through the midfield, turning defence into attack with some well placed hits to the awaiting forward line. Sweeper Beverly McCullough managed to stifle all the Ballymoney threats, creating a number of chances resulting in two excellent goals scored by centre forward, Deborah-Anne McCoy. All in all a great home win, final result 4-1. Four well taken goals, a solid defensive performance and the midfield working hard applying great pressure. Now the 3rds hope to transfer their cup form to the league and climb the table!
Player of the match was Louise Hunter.
