Greenisland Ladies U14s were in action on Sunday 18 October playing against Grosvenor. Coach, Karla Hunter’s, pre-match talk must have been a good one because the goals came thick and fast for this young team.
The first half saw Greenisland go 6-1 up with Samm Cox opening the scoring from a superb ball driven into the circle by captain, Corrie Johnston. Moments later a shot hit the post and Jade Gardiner was denied a goal.
Of the five further goals scored in the first half, three came from defensive clearances by Chloe Carlin and Megan Ingram, played through midfield and were netted by Emily Macartney, Sophie Mills and Lauren Kirker. Two came from set play and were supplied by Corrie Johnston. A long corner from Corrie was deflected into the goalmouth by Lauren Kirker and the sixth goal was helped into the net by Jade Gardiner.
Just before half time, Grosvenor secured a consolation goal.
With Lauren Kirker on a potential hat-trick, Greenisland’s U14s were lining up to score more goals in the second half. Samm Cox scored two more goals in the opening minutes. Not to be outdone, Jade Gardiner bagged her second goal of the afternoon and a memorable goalmouth scramble saw Sophie Mills net her second goal. Claire Courtney had played a great match in midfield, supplying balls to the forwards and she was rewarded for her hard work when she scored towards the end of the second half.
Time spent practicing short corner routines paid off. Corrie Johnston’s initial strike was saved, however, Corrie was quick to act and slammed the ball into the net off the rebound.
It was player of the match, Samm Cox, who rounded off Greenisland’s goal-fest! Samm had played a superb second half, scoring a hat-trick to bring her tally of goals for the day to four. Keeper, Amy McWhirter, having had a very tiring day (not!) declared she was going home for a lie down.
With the final score Greenisland 13 – Grosvenor 1, the U14s coach was overjoyed and very proud of the team’s result. The next U14 fixture is scheduled for 16 November when the Greenisland girls play Mossley. Thanks go to umpire Emma Douglas, and to all the parents who came along to support and encourage their daughters.
Team: Amy McWhirter, Corrie Johnston (Capt), Chloe Carlin, Megan Ingram, Sophie Mills, Claire Courtney, Emily Macartney, Samm Cox, Jade Gardiner and Lauren Kirker
