Greenisland 1st XI travelled to Cork to compete in the 3rd round of the Irish Trophy on Saturday 5th December against Ashton 1st XI. It was a very early start in the morning and after travelling down in some atrocious weather the team arrived at their destination. Unfortunately the pitch had flooded and the game had to be moved to another venue. Finally on arrival and a short warm up the game could start. The raining was pouring down as the game got underway.
Greenisland got off to a slow start with Ashton having the early pressure.
Slowly Greenisland started to make inroads into the Ashton half and eventually
were rewarded with a series of penalty corners. The game was turning into
quite a physical encounter and style of play that the Greenisland team rarely
come across.
Ashton then broke and were awarded a penalty corner. From the push out the
shot on goal was struck but the players stick also flew into the circle and
landed in front of the keeper’s feet. The ball was cleared and then
came back in with stick unclaimed in the circle and in the melee the ball
was put into the Greenisland net. The goal was given much to the surprise
of the Greenisland team.
From the restart Greenisland exerted more pressure but Ashton cleared up field and as the Greenisland player moved to clear she slipped on the wet pitch as the rain continued to pour down. An Ashton player pounced on the Ball and ran in on goal and shot, Ruth Hewitt in nets managed to slow the shot down but it trickled into the net. The half time whistle arrived shortly after this.
Coach Mark Webber had words of encouragement for the team and tried to ensure they stepped up to the physical challenge. The second half got under way with neither side gaining the ascendancy. Each side were awarded penalty corners but none were converted. Then with 20 minutes left Ashton were awarded a penalty corner for an alleged rising deflected ball in the circle. From this penalty corner Ashton eventually squeezed the ball into the net. Greenisland valiantly tried to reply and finished the match continuously in attack. However at the final whistle Ashton had won 3-0 and Greenisland’s Irish adventure was over.
The Greenisland team had given there all in very difficult and tiring circumstances and praise must go to all the players who were saturated and cold by the end of the match. Jasmine Patterson was named player of the match for a superb effort at the centre of defence. After excellent hospitality by Ashton the long journey home began. Finally thanks must go to match sponsor Eden Car sales and GWMSC for their continued support.
Greenisland 1st XI Squad: R Hewitt, N Deering, C McManus, E Kirkpatrick, J Patterson, J Henry (capt.), G Kane, C McCracken, N Cairns, D Montgomery, CA Bennett, K Smiley, K Hunter, J Adamson, L Archibald, G Cathcart.
