Greenisland 1st XI travelled to Ballymoney to play in the 2nd round of the McConnell Shield. Greenisland always realised that although ranked above Ballymoney 2nd XI this was always going to be a tough encounter and so it was. Ballymoney started the faster and had some excellent link play to put Greenisland under pressure. One penalty corner and two shots from Ballymoney finally stirred Greenisland into action.
With rolling substitutions and slight tactical changes Greenisland started to find their feet. After a period of neither team dominating Greenisland broke down the right, some neat skills allowed Penny Brown to break free on the right of the circle from which she drove a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net. Unfortunately Greenisland could not capitalise on this and only led by the one goal at half time.
The second half opened with Ballymoney on the attack but Greenisland quickly countered and some swift passing down the left via Dawn Montgomery which led to Greenisland’s first penalty corner. Greenisland continued to press and from another penalty corner the Ballymoney keeper saved the initial shot but Erin McMaw tapped the rebound in.
This brought on a sustained period of pressure from Ballymoney who after a series of penalty corners scored with a deflected shot. Greenisland realised this was crunch time and stepped up a gear and dominated for the final ten minutes of the half. The result at the final whistle was 2-1 to Greenisland and a place in the Quarter Finals of the McConnell Shield.
Penny Brown was the player of the match.
