Greenisland travelled to Grosvenor on Saturday as league leaders and were determined that they would still be top of the pile on the way home. The home team had the better of the opening play, calling the Greenisland goalkeeper into action and winning an early short corner. However the Greenisland defence coped well with the pressure and soon the team found their stride, making steady progress into their opponents half.
With ten minutes remaining in the first half it was Greenisland who broke the deadlock. Good work down the right side resulted in Nikki Cairns dribbling into the circle and having a shot on goal. Although the initial shot was saved, the Grosvenor defence failed to clear the danger and striker Erin McMaw made no mistake from close range, smashing the ball against the backboard to make it 1-0 to Greenisland.
In the second half Greenisland continued to apply pressure and made progress into the Grosvenor circle on many occasions, winning several short corners in the process. It was from one of these that Jenny Henry doubled Greenisland's lead with a powerful shot from the edge of the circle. Grosvenor however didn't give up and hit Greenisland on the break, earning themselves a series of short corners of their own. After the initial shot had been saved, Grosvenor were first to the rebound and scored to make it 2-1 with 15 minutes to go.
Both sides had shooting opportunities in the final stages of the game, although it was Greenisland who carved out the more clear cut chances. It was from another short corner that they secured their win with a third goal when player of the match Jenny Winning put away the rebound following a shot from Nikki Cairns. The result keeps Greenisland at the top of Senior 2 with 10 points from 4 games.
