Carly Anne Bennett

Carrick Ladies 1st XI 1
Greenisland Ladies 1st XI 2
Sat 19th September 2009

Greenisland 1sts played Carrickfergus 1sts on the opening day of the league season. Overall this was a tough game for both teams, as would be expected in a local derby.

Both teams were striving for supremacy in the early stages. Eventually Greenisland broke through with a swift move, which Carly Ann Bennett slotted home. Greenisland continued to press, although Jasmine Patterson had to retire due to injury. Eventually from penalty corner and a scramble Jenny Winning got the second goal.

As the half drew to a close Carrick began to press and from a penalty corner routine a superb shot was tucked into the top corner. Carrick continued this pressure until the half time whistle.

The second half was draining both teams in the intense heat. It was nip and tuck but over the whole match Greenisland had more circle penetrations and more penalty corners. Leah Crooks played very well in nets making some excellent saves. Nikki Cairns worked tirelessly, Naomi Deering was superb in defence alongside Gillian Kane. Jenny Henry led by stirring example.

Carly Ann Bennett was player of the match with superb runs and work effort. The whole team worked continuously to grind out the result. Final score Greenisland 2 Carrick 1.
