Greenisland 1st XI travelled to North Dublin to compete in the 2nd round of the Irish Trophy on Saturday 21st November against Fingal 1st XI. After travelling down in some atrocious weather the team arrived at their destination. There was a quick warm up before game got underway just as conditions cleared.
Greenisland immediately went on the attack and created some early chances. This was then followed by several penalty corners for Greenisland but good defence and goal keeping kept them at bay. Carly Ann Bennett was terrorising the Fingal defence with some deft stick work combined with powerful running. Eventually this strong attacking play got the ball into the circle were Jenny Henry blasted in the opening goal.
From the restart Fingal did manage some attacks and had a shot on goal that Ruth Hewitt dealt with. This stirred Greenisland whom then resumed their pressure but they could not score. Half time arrived with Greenisland leading.
The second half opened with Fingal in attack for the initial minutes. This resulted in two penalty corners and from the second Ita McMahon scored on the rebound from the save from the initial shot. Greenisland responded and with rolling substitutions kept the intensity going. Several penalty corners were again blocked but mid way through the second half the ball broke in the circle for Carly Ann Bennett to strike and score.
Greenisland continued to press for more goals but did not succeed. The Greenisland goal was never threatened for the rest of the match. There had been some tactical changes for this match and as the team settled this paid dividends. The whole team had played their part and at the final whistle it was with delight that they had progressed in an Irish cup further than ever before.
The team went to the Fingal clubhouse and Fingal are to be commended on their hospitality. Once fed and watered the team set off for home after an enjoyable and satisfying day of hockey. Player of the match was Carly Ann Bennett.
