Greenisland travelled to UU Elks 2nds on Saturday for a McConnell Shield 1st round match. Greenisland started the match on top and created a few early chances before Elks started to apply more pressure towards the middle of the half however the Greenisland defence coped well and Elks created few clear cut chances. On the stroke of half time however, Elks were awarded a penalty corner and after a goal mouth scramble they converted to go into the break 1-0 up.
In the second half, both sides shared the possession and despite some heavy pressure from Elks, Greenisland managed to fight hard and see off any chances thanks to determined defending and some good saves from Ruth Hewitt. Half way through the second half, pressure from Greenisland paid off and they were awarded several penalty corners. With usual striker Jenny Henry off the pitch injured, Greenisland improvised and Jenny Winning slipped the ball to the left where Dawn Montgomery coolly slotted home to level the score.
Following this, Elks immediately attacked again and the play continued with neither team on top but each trying to create chances when they had possession. With the end of the match nearing, and the possibility of extra time, Greenisland pushed hard to try and find the winner and were awarded a penalty corner with just 3minutes left to play. Jenny Winning had a first time shot blocked by the defender but the ball rebounded to her and she smashed the ball into the bottom right corner to win a hard-fought match for Greenisland which sees them progress into the 2nd round. Player of the match was Claire McManus.
