Greenisland 1st XI hosted Coleraine 1st XI in their second game of Senior
2 league campaign. Greenisland came out strong and dominated the game from
start to finish bar a momentary lapse at the end of the first half. After
20 minutes of Greenisland pressure they were awarded a penalty corner. The
initial shot was cleared by the Coleraine keeper but Greenisland got the ball
back into the circle and Jenny Winning pushed it into the net from close range.
From the restart Greenisland regained possession and continued to attack.
The introduction of Nikki Cairns gave fresh impetuous to the attack and only
for outstanding goal keeping Greenisland would have been further ahead from
a reverse stick shot from Nikki. Then as the half drew to a close Coleraine
gained some momentum and finally attacked the Greenisland goal but this soon
petered out.
The second half followed the same pattern. From a delightful ball into the
circle Dawn Montgomery coolly slotted into the net. Greenisland continued
to press and eventually were rewarded with a third goal. Jenny Winning again
scoring from close range.
This was an improved performance from the team with more energy and drive.
The statistics show Greenisland had 23 shots on target compared to Coleraine’s
4. All players gave their all with Nikki Cairns and Penny Brown joint players
of the match. Final score 3-0 to Greenisland.
