Greenisland Ladies 2nd XI 0
Knock Ladies 2nd XI 1
Sat 10th October 2009

On Saturday 10th October 2009, Greenisland Ladies 2nd X1 hosted Knock Ladies in their 3rd match of the new season. After a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Lisnagarvey 2 weeks ago, the girls were determined to get back to their winning ways.

The game started with Knock taking control and putting pressure on Greenisland defence. However the back line of Leigh Carlin, Corrie Johnston, Karla Hunter and Claire Mayne dealt with everything Knock threw at them ensuring young keeper Leah Crooks had little work to do. After settling into the game Greenisland Ladies began to play some superb hockey with the midfield of Audrey MacCorquodale, Eileen Reynolds and Genevieve Cathcart working tirelessly to support both the defence and the forward line.
The match was end to end in the first half with both teams fighting for the ball and showing great strength and determination. Half-time score 0-0.

After an encouraging half-time team talk from coach Karen Elwood and manager Peter Browne the girls went into the second half controlling the game and dominating most of the play. The forward line of Norma Montgomery, Tara Connor and Lindsay Anderson began to break down Knocks’ defence and were unlucky not to grab a goal. A series of short corners were saved by an on-form Knock keeper. Audrey MacCorquodale had a fantastic second half, proving herself a nuisance for the Knock midfield and defence, and continually supporting both the Greenisland defence and forward line.

With Knock only having one shot on target the entire game so far, Greenisland began to press for the deserved win with the back line pushing forward to support the midfield and forward line. However, in a controversial decision, Knock were awarded a short corner, the initial shot was saved by Greenisland keeper Leah Crooks, however the follow up was flicked into the top right hand corner putting Knock 1-0 up totally against the run of play.

After a final push to get one back the girls were unfortunate to run out of time and were left extremely disappointed not to have salvaged something from a game which they controlled for long periods. A game which highlighted a great team effort and work rate, every player gave their all.

Well done to substitutes Carla Brown and Rosie Hay for their hard work on the pitch. Greenisland's’ player of the match was captain Eileen Reynolds, a superb game in centre midfield. Many thanks to Emma Douglas for umpiring, to coach Karen Elwood and manager Peter Browne for their continued encouragement and to our supporters.

Greenisland 2nd XI: L Crooks, L Carlin, K Hunter, C Johnston, C Mayne, A MacCorquodale, E Reynolds (Capt.), G Cathcart, N Montgomery, L Anderson, T Connor, C Brown, R Hay.
