Greenisland 2nd XI travelled to face Ards 2nd XI Saturday 12th December to play for a place in the Quarter Finals of the McConnell Shield. Greenisland started the first half with a new formation and cautiously tried to get into their style of play. A well drilled Ards team took advantage of Greenisland’s hesitant start and put the score to 2-0 before half time.
After considering the options at half time, Greenisland decided to go all out in the second half reverting back to the usual formation. They were rewarded a few minutes after the re-start with a lovely goal from Tara Connor which seemed to bring the rest of the team to life. Ards had very few chances in the second half with Greenisland’s defence of Louise Archibald, Leigh Carlin, Karla Hunter and Claire Mayne marking tightly and not allowing any play into the circle.
The midfield of Audrey MacCorquodale, Eileen Reynolds, Ruth Creaney and Genevieve Cathcart tried to contain the very quick and skillful Ards midfield and support the forwards Norma Montgomery, Tara Connor and Louise Hunter. After a long spell of pressure, Norma Montgomery found the net from close range and everything was left to play for. Extra-time was played but neither team could find a break to get the golden goal.
So it was going to be left to penalty flicks to decide the winner. After going through the first five flick takers, the score was still even, and again after another five flicks. Leah Crooks was outstanding in goals and the young 15 year old made some excellent saves to make the final score 8 flicks to 7 to Greenisland.
Player of the match went to goalkeeper Leah Crooks as Greenisland came away a very well deserved and hard fought win. Many thanks to Karen Elwood for Umpiring and Olive Crooks and Lynsey Anderson for their support from the side line.
