Greenisland Ladies 2nd XI hosted Lurgan 2nd XI, a strong team who have previously beaten many teams this season, and so Greenisland knew this would be a tough game. From the whistle Lurgan came out strong, with many young and skilful players creating several chances in the opening 10 minutes. However the Greenisland defence marked well and with good saves from Leah Crooks, they prevented any goals from entering the net.
After this defensive start, Greenisland worked hard and began to turn things around, moving the ball out of their defence. For most of the first half both teams had equal possession of the ball with shots on goal coming from both sides. The first half ended 0-0, ensuring Greenisland would have to work hard and score goals in the second half to win this tough game.
At half time, with a great team talk from Karen Elwood, Greenisland realised this was a match they were capable of winning. After the restart Greenisland dominated much of the play, creating many chances in the opponents circle. There was good passing from the midfield of Audrey MacCorquodale, Eileen Reynolds and Claire Mayne to the forwards, where Greenisland eventually won a penalty corner. At the corner Eileen Reynolds strongly pushed the ball out to Norma Montgomery where she held the ball for the opposition to come out of the goal before quickly switching the ball to Ruth Creaney who struck the ball well putting it straight into the goal making it 1-0.
With Greenisland Ladies in the lead Lurgan continued to put pressure in the Greenisland half, but the defence of Leigh Carlin, Corrie Johnston, Karla Hunter, Louise Archibald and Ruth Creaney, marked well stopping Lurgan from scoring. After great play up both sides of the pitch from the forwards of Norma Montgomery, Tara Connor Genevieve Cathcart and Louise Hunter, Greenisland started to win free hits from the edge of the circle and put strong pressure on the Lurgan defence.
With the new auto pass rule Audrey MacCorquodale was able to take a free hit were she dribbled 5 meters into the oppositions circle to score a great individual goal making the score 2-0 to Greenisland Ladies. At the end of the second half Lurgan Ladies came back strong and after numerous penalty corners they eventually scored with five minutes left on the clock.
Final score was 2-1 to a very happy Greenisland Ladies squad and as all played so well this week the player of the match went to the whole squad.
Many thanks to Emma Douglas for umpiring, to Karen Elwood, Jackie Nelson, Peter Browne for coaching, and to our supporters.
