Knock Ladies 2nd XI 0
Greenisland Ladies 2nd XI 6
Sat 23rd January 2010

Greenisland 2nd XI played away to Knock 2nd XI in their first return league match after the Christmas break. The first half was mostly evenly matched until right wing Louise Hunter crossed a superb ball across the circle which was slammed home by left wing Norma Montgomery.

After a motivating team talk from Coach Karen Elwood and Team Manager Peter Brown the team returned to the field determined to increase the lead and secure three valuable points.

Great play from right midfield Genevieve Cathcart and forward Lindsay Anderson created several opportunities for the forwards to put the Knock goalkeeper under pressure and a great shot from Genevieve Cathcart was denied by the post. Greenisland had stepped up a gear and in the space of ten minutes scored four more goals by leading team goal-scorer, Tara Connor.

Captain Eileen Reynolds played her usual pivotal role which meant the play was switched to both sides of the pitch making the game difficult for Knock to defend. Audrey Maccorquodale (joint player of the match) had an outstanding game giving the Knock players no time on the ball to maintain Greenisland playing an attacking game. The defense allowed nothing past them apart from one shot at goal from a penalty corner which resulted in a superb save from an on-form keeper Leah Crooks. Defense players Karla Hunter, Leigh Carlin and Claire Mayne also played a very attacking game and were consistent throughout with well timed tackles and passes out of defense.

Left back Ruth Creaney (joint player of the match) had a particularly brilliant game working tirelessly in the left back position constantly denying Knock's right wing from finding anyway forward. In the dying minutes, Captain Eileen Reynolds carried the ball into the circle and with a first time strike scored a brilliant goal taking the score to a comfortable 6-0 victory.

This game has given the team the confidence to maintain their place in Junior 1 and it is a great preparation for their impending Irish Junior Cup match on Saturday 30 January in Clontarf, Dublin.

Many thanks to Alyson Douglas for umpiring.
