On Saturday 24th October 2009, Greenisland 2nd XI played host to Priorians 2nd XI in the first round of the McConnell Shield. From the whistle a determined Greenisland side dominated the game, getting to their opponent's attacking circle within the first couple of minutes. This early pressure from the Greenisland forward line of Lindsay Anderson, Tara Connor and Kathryn Smiley resulted in the first goal of many from centre forward Tara Connor.
Greenisland continued to pressure the Priorian defence allowing Eileen Reynolds (captain) to slot the ball past the keeper and give Greenisland a 2-0 lead within the first ten minutes. The continued work rate of the Greenisland midfield, Audrey MacCorquodale, Eileen Reynolds, Genevieve Cathcart and Rosie Hay resulted in a penalty corner to Tara Connor who hit a shot on target giving the keeper no chance of saving it. Another goal by Eileen Reynolds left the half time score 4-0 to a delighted Greenisland.
From the beginning of the second half it was clear that Greenisland were not going to be complacent and were there to win. Priorians were able to get to Greenisland’s defensive circle but the defensive line of Claire Mayne, Karla Hunter, Louise Archibald, Corrie Johnston and Ruth Creaney made sure Priorians had no opportunity to score. A brilliant save from young goalie Amy McWhirter kept Priorians score line to zero.
An attacking Greenisland side continued to tire the Priorian defence with great runs up the right wing from Kathryn Smiley creating many goal scoring opportunities. She brought the ball to the back line and pushed it to the penalty spot allowing player of the match Tara Connor to put 3 more goals more past the keeper.
Another penalty corner saw Audrey MacCorquodale pass straight back to Eileen Reynolds who took a first time shot to find the bottom right corner of the net to leave the full time score at 8-0. Player of the Match was Tara Connor.
