Ards Ladies 5th XI 6
Greenisland Ladies 5th XI 0
Sat 19th September 2009

The 5th XI travelled to Newtownards on Saturday to fulfil their first league fixture of the new season.

When the goalkeeper did not turn up as planned, the team had to reorganise at very short notice and it was young Laura Cole who stepped up to the mark and ‘volunteered’ to put on the keeper kit (for the first time ever!). Laura, and her defence of Jan, Justine, Rachel and Michelle, soon found themselves under pressure in the opening minutes of the game; Ards bringing the score to 2-0 within the first five minutes. Undeterred, the girls settled into the game and got the ball through to the midfield. A further break in play saw the visitors trail by 3-0 at half time.

After an invigorating half-time team talk, this young team took to the pitch full of enthusiasm. The midfield of Jeanna, Zoe and Lindsay worked tirelessly and passed some great balls through to the Greenisland forwards. Centre forward and one of last season’s U14 players, Lauren Kirker, played well, winning tackles and putting pressure on the Ards defence. Supported on the wings by Stef and Tinita, the girls won a few penalty corners but were unable to find the back of the net. Meanwhile, the team’s rookie keeper went from strength to strength and made many excellent saves. Had it not been for Laura, the final score could have been 26-0 and not the 6-0 it was … well done Laura!

Thanks go to umpire, Barbra Webber.

Team: Lindsay Boyd, Laura Cole, Jan Doherty, Zoe Johnston, Michelle Kinnon, Lauren Kirker, Stef Morton (Capt), Tinita Nolan, Justine Ritchie, Jeanna Robb and Rachel Spencely.
