Greenisland Ladies 5th XI 0
PSNI Ladies 3rd XI 0
Sat 26th September 2009

The 5th XI enjoyed a home fixture at Belfast High School pitches this week against PSNI 3rd XI. After last week’s defeat at Ards, the 5th XI needed to put in a stronger performance … and that’s exactly what they did!

In a keenly contested first half, both sides vied for possession. It was Greenisland’s midfield (and Carrick College girls) Jan Doherty, Tinita Nolan and Jeanna Robb who played strongly and fed the ball through to the forwards. Working well on the left wing, Janice Gawley beat her player several times and sent crosses into the circle. It was unfortunate that the PSNI defence denied the team a goal.

Moving into the second half with a scoreless draw, Greenisland were determined not to loose this match. There was great supporting play by midfielder Tara Shepperd who released the ball to forward line of Laura Cowan, Lindsay Boyd and Janice Gawley (Player of the Match). Greenisland won three penalty corners in succession but the team was unable to find the back of the net. The PSNI seemed to move up a gear and for the final ten minutes of the game, the pressure on the Greenisland defence was relentless. Keeper, Carol Simpson, saved the day with a goal-line clearance and dogged defending from young Rachel Spencely, and slightly older Michelle Currie, Rhonda Ross and Barbra Webber kept the score sheet to 0-0 at full time.

Thanks go to umpire, Ian Ritchie
