Greenisland Ladies U12s go to Finals Day

Greenisland’s youngest team sponsored by Sainsbury’s, the U12s, travelled to Cookstown on Sunday 18 April to participate in the Ulster Hockey Union U12s Finals Day.

With five games to play in the opening group stages, the Greenisland girls got off to a great start with wins against Rainey, Mossley and Raphoe. The Rainey match was a convincing 4-0 win with Judithe Allen scoring a hat-trick and Chloe McGrugan opening her scoring of the day. The second game against Mossley was much more keenly contested ending in a 2-1 win with goals from Anna Hutchinson and a second of the day for Chloe. The Raphoe match was also a 2-1 win with a further goal from Chloe and a first for Lois Gordon. The remaining two group matches were against Banbridge and Belfast Harlequins with Greenisland losing 2-0 and 3-0 respectively.

The top three teams from each group were then put forward to play in the Cup Finals with the bottom three teams playing in the Plate Finals. The Greenisland girls, having finished in the top three of their group, knew they would face stiff opposition from Lurgan A and Lurgan B in the Cup Final games.

During the match against Lurgan A, the Greenisland girls experienced true opposition. Excellent passing and shooting from an on-form Lurgan A side, saw the score end 6-0. The Lurgan B match proved to be a more evenly contested game, the Greenisland girls holding the Lurgan B side to a goalless draw.

The support and encouragement from the girls’ parents was excellent and really was appreciated. The U12s Coaches were very pleased with the girls’ attitude and performances throughout the day and look forward to welcoming the girls back to Junior hockey when it recommences in September.
