In the shelter of the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Magherafelt, Greenisland’s U12s played in four games on Sunday.
With no goalkeeper available, the girls democratically decided to do a draw to see who would don the kit. First up in goals was Julea Glover who kept a clean sheet in an evenly contested match against Ballymena U12s. Final score 0-0.
The defence of Abbie Kirker and Caitlin White were also kept busy during the second match against a strong Rainey side. The 2-0 loss reflected the dominance of the Rainey side.
Next to don the kit was Chloe McGrugan in a match against Randalstown. The Greenisland girls feared for the worst when moments into the game a shot whizzed past the defence and Randalstown scored. However, the midfield of Lauren McDowell and Annie Brown worked hard and the score remained 1-0 to Randalstown at the final whistle.
Ending the day on a high, the Greenisland girls came out on top against Larne. The pressure was all one-way, with excellent defensive clearances by Anna Hutchinson. It was Judithe Allen who pounced on a Larne defensive error to bring the match to 1-0 win for Greenisland.
Thanks go to umpire Barbra Webber and also to the girls’ parents who came along to encourage and cheer-on their daughters. U12s coach, Nikki Cairns was delighted with the girls’ performance and high 5’d all round!
