U14S MARCH INTO ULSTER FINALS

On Sunday 21st March 2010, Greenisland Ladies U14s sponsored by Sainburys, Carrickfergus came up against local rivals Carrick Ladies Under 14s. Knowing that a win would take them to the Ulster Finals for the first time the girls were ready for this match and knew only a win was good enough.

From the beginning the Greenisland Girls controlled the match, with captain Jade Gardiner leading her team from Centre-Back. Within 2 minutes Greenisland’s reward came, an excellent strike from centre forward Hannah McCleery left Carrick’s keeper stranded and put Greenisland 1-0 up. With confidence levels high the girls picked up their game and began to play some fantastic free flowing hockey. Their passing and moving off the ball was fantastic and the goals began to tally up. Hannah grabbed her second 3 minutes later. Young Caprice Flanaghan pestered the Carrickfergus defence winning a series of short corners to which captain Jade Gardiner stepped up and smashed two consecutively into the net. Greenisland forward Emily Harris had a fantastic game, showing off her speed and skill but most impressively her reaction to the ball, she got her reward within 2 minutes of coming on the pitch and grabbed Greenisland’s 5th of the game.

Greenisland defence of Kara Munn, Emma Murphy, Rebekah Murray, Jade Gardiner, Shannon Cavey and Rachel Scott remained solid throughout the game. With little pressure on defensively, they penetrated up and down the pitch supplying the midfield and forward line with superb balls and making excellent runs to aid Greenisland’s attack. Half-time score 5-0.

Following the half time break the girls did not sit back, tireless work from midfielders, Claire Courtney, Emily Macartney, Carly McReynolds, Chloe Carlin and Caprice Flanaghan ensured Greenisland kept on the attack resulting in the goals tallying up. A great pass across the goal mouth found Emily Macartney at the back post who was sure to smash it into the net.

Claire Courtney took the ball out of defence, great link up play between herself and Chloe Carlin worked the ball up the pitch and as she hit the circle a superb strike thundered against the backboard.

An outstanding individual run from Emily Macartney up the left hand side, saw her take on and beat many of the opposition finishing her run with a perfectly placed goal. Hannah McCleery Greenisland’s leading goal scorer this season was determined to up her tally, an out and out goal scorer she was sure to capitalise on every opportunity and grabbed her third of the game 10 minutes into the second half.

As the ball came out to Hannah McCleery, who had already secured her hat-trick she unselfishly passed to her counterpart Emily Harris who perfectly placed the ball in the bottom right hand corner. Captain Jade Gardiner stepped up for another short corner, with excellent accuracy and a powerful strike she too ensured she grabbed her hat-trick. 11-0 up Chloe Carlin broke free in the circle and won another short corner for Greenisland. Again Jade stepped up for the strike only to be denied by an excellent save from Carrick’s keeper, however Emily Macartney who was sitting on 2 goals was determined to get her hat-trick and was sure to follow up the rebound, slotting it into bottom corner of the net finishing the match in style for Greenisland and grabbing her third of the game.
