The more senior members of Greenisland Ladies Hockey Club took to the pitch
on Friday night in a Veterans League encounter against Knock Ladies.
Knock are new to the Veterans line-up and fielded a strong team, making it
difficult for the home team to by-pass their defenses. It was Knock who opened
the scoring, breaking through Greenisland's back line and sneaking a goal
past the keeper. From the re-start, Greenisland immediately took the play
to Knock. A superb ball in from Heather Sharpe found Celia Shilliday's stick
and Celia wasted no time in scoring the equaliser. Sustaining the pressure
and momentum, Greenisland were awarded a short corner. From this, Mandy Axon
(Player of the Match) scored the second goal for Greenisland - taking them
2-1 up at the end of the first half.
The second half was keenly contested but neither team managed to add to their
first half goal tallies and the game finished in a 2-1 win for the Greenisland
Veterans.
The team thank David King for umpiring and Alyson Douglas for the half-time
hot port ... maybe that's why no more goals were scored!!
