Greenisland Ladies Club Tournament

With pre-season drawing to a close, Greenisland Ladies Hockey Club held an intra-club tournament on Saturday 28 August. Teams were drawn at random, each participant having been given a number. What emerged were three squads: Emma’s Unnamed Wonders, Lindsay’s Moaning Minnies and Leigh’s Loudmouth Lovelies. Games of 20 minutes each way were played with home and away fixtures being contested with neutral umpires in attendance.

Midway in the competition, the honours were even with the Unnamed Wonders and the Loudmouth Lovelies tied not only on points but on goal difference. The Moaning Minnies pulled back a few points in the latter stages of the competition, but left it a little too late to seriously challenge the leaders.

So it came down to the final game between the Unnamed Wonders and the Loudmouth Lovelies. To win, the Lovelies could have sat back and defended for a draw, however, they took the attack to the Unnamed Wonders and within the first 7 minutes of the game, the Lovelies had scored a hat-trick. The Wonders did fight back, but the might of the Lovelies was too much to overcome and they ran out 4-2 winners.

Many thanks to David King and Karen Elwood for umpiring throughout the afternoon.

The draw took place for a year’s worth of free fees, with a delighted Norma Montgomery taking the prize. A great afternoon’s hockey was enjoyed by all – with a few of the more mature ladies heading for hot baths and ibrufen!
