Greenisland 1st XI travelled to Knock for their first match in this season's ONE 1918 Senior League 1 in an exciting tie which was made difficult by torrential rain. Greenisland knew they were up against a strong team despite Knock having been relegated from Premier League last season.
Greenisland started the game the stronger team and dominated the first half with some beautiful passing movements between the midfield and forwards bringing several chances on goals which they should really have put away. Lindsay Moore created several opportunities with some strong dribbling and narrowly hit a ball past the left hand post. Greenisland's perseverance finally paid off when Lindsay Moore turned a reverse shot into the net from an impossibly tight angle. Despite more attacking moves Greenisland were unable to convert any more before the half time whistle
Knock came out in the second half rejeuvenated and started to put Greenisland's defence under attack with the game becoming end to end attacking. Rachel Johnston, Nikki Cairns, Ruth Creaney and Louise Archibald defended strongly and allowed the midfield and forward time to get back and help. Knock managed to snatch an equaliser after a frantic goal line scramble left a Knock player one on one at point blank range.
Despite this Greenisland fought hard to steal a victory and they thought they had done just that when Lindsay Moore converted a penalty corner however a controversial umpiring decision meant that the game ended 1-1. However Greenisland should be pleased with their first point of the 2011-12 season.
