Greenisland 1st XI welcomed Cookstown to Carrick for their 2nd match of the season in what was a hard fought contest.
Greenisland started the game the stronger team and dominated the first part of the half with some strong teamwork preventing Cookstown from clearing the ball out of their defence. The Greenisland forwards and midfield worked well to put some good passing movements together however they were unable to properly take advantage of their strong play. Cookstown started to come more into the game as the half progressed and the game became end to end stuff.
Cookstown took advantage of some sloppy Greenisland marking to put themselves 1-0 up and frustrate Greenisland. Just before half time Greenisland won a penalty corner and a shot from Jenny Henry rebounded into the path of Nikki Cairns (pictured) who excellently slotted the ball home from a tight angle bringing the equaliser for Greenisland.
The 2nd half was more end to end stuff with some good runs from Lindsay Moore resulting in several chances which were squandered by Greenisland. Cookstown took the lead in the latter part of the half when a strong run left Greenisland keeper Emma Getty one on one with the opposition player.
Greenisland started to up the tempo and close down Cookstown creating several half chances in the process. With just 3 minutes left to play Gillian Kane intercepted a pass and laid the ball off to Lindsay Moore who made a run into the circle and played a reverse shot through to Gillian who cooly slotted the ball home having made a run to the left hand post. Greenisland were happy to have gained a point in a tough game.
