This week saw Greenisland 3rd XI play host to Cookstown 2nd
XI at the Amphitheatre in Carrickfergus. Greenisland were under no illusion
that this was going to be their toughest match to date and with our firsts
playing Cookstown 1sts they were sure to have some handy players available
to them. The girls took to the pitch in the pouring rain for a late 4pm fixture.
The play was evenly matched with both teams putting pressure on defence. Strong
defending from Leigh Carlin, Jacky Nelson and Heather Sharpe made sure nothing
broke through into the circle.
An absolute tireless performance came from Audrey Macorquodale (pictured)
in the centre of the park. She worked the ball up the pitch on several occasions
and it was her accurate pass to Lauren Montgomery that opened the scoring.
Another excellent game from Lauren playing left wing saw her runner up player
of the match. She was perfectly positioned to slot home the second after another
superb pass from Audrey. Greenisland earned quite a few short corners in the
first half but an on form Cookstown keeper denied both Jacky and Judith from
increasing the score.
The second half saw Cookstown step up their game but to no avail as Greenisland's
defence thwarted any attack from them. Great passing between Leigh and Judith
enabled the ball to move up the pitch and allow the midfield of Jeanna, Jenny,
Audrey and Karen time to pass onto the forwards. After a succession of penalty
corners and sustained pressure on Cookstown defence Greenisland added another
to the score sheet.
A perfectly executed penalty corner to Norma Montgomery saw
her drill the ball into the backboards and leave the final score 3:0 to Greenisland.
That's now 4 matches played with 4 wins and no goals against. Player of the
match went deservedly to Audrey Macorquodale. Many thanks to Alyson Douglas
